Dear Mr Cappelletti,
Greetings and salutations! My name is Valeria Orea Alvarez and this is a portfolio for my best work in my illustrator class. I liked many of the project that we have completed but my utmost favorite it the Dollar Bill. This was my favorite for multiple reasons. First it was a project that went beyond the usual tutorial in illustrator, we had to use our knowledge and thinking and research to complete this project. Its valuable because of the skills you learn in coding along with design techniques. This class teaches you the skills necessary to make your own illustrator products and perhaps one day create illustrations for someone else, while getting paid. Our world has become more dependant on computers and technology, this would be the perfect class to take to be prepared for future projects in making websites or designing a game, if you're looking into the career of making money through design It teaches you to think more about planning ahead and formatting key points in your work. College credit is important to pass high school and develop a more systematic idea of how my work ethic would pay off.

The Superhero comic project is one that had us convert ourselves into the ideal superhero of our choice. For this project we used many tools such as the pen and pencil and the live bucket or blob tool to draw ourselves out. This project helped me get a better understanding of how to construct colors and text. I learned how to use the 3D tool to make text pop out, it's different setting created different types of 3D arrays. The hardest part was creating the comic background. There was a lot of steps into making the background, first making one triangle shape and then using the center tool to drag it to the tip of the triangle. After that is done you take the duplicate tool and create another to then makeshift into a circle. The final step is transforming it to fit your artboard and then putting effects on it to make it look comical. I enjoyed the making of the actual fusion between me and the superhero the best. This project was great for any further projects in web design or character designs.

Flash Aesops fable
|
The Aesops Fables project was the most complex and fun activity up to date. In order to create animations that would display my fable I needed to learned about scenes stop and commands and so many different actions that would make my movie complete. The one thing that I struggled with was the timing of the stop commands, it seems that in order to produce an accurate time zone you have to insert a stop command on every scene. Then you have to manage that time zone by giving it a limit. The most fun I had was inserting sound and developing scenes. To create sound we had to first download a file and then import it to flash and then past its code on the scenes. By developing the scenes we were able to create animations and although it took a lot of time in the end it was worth it because we were finally able to animate something and have it do as you please. This project was a great opportunity to go into animating and scene development.

Product LAbel
The product Label was more of an experimentation with how text works and how you can modify text to fit your needs. I learned how to use the pen tool and other transformations. The most difficult part was arranging separate letters when you have a whole word selected, which I learned you have to expand and then use the direct select tool to choose each letter individually. This project was generally fun to play around with.

SYM for illustrator
One of the most important art concepts I learned in this class was Symbolism, Symbolism in art is a depiction of a certain powerful message without any words but rather images that exhibit the true meaning behind it it, it is a sort of allegory. These images tell either a story, concept, idea, ideals, or values. In my illustrator class, was able to use symbolism to portray my ideals and stories. For example one of our first projects was the portrait project in these sequences we had to find our own way to make it special or meaningful. I choose the black and white route because I thought it represented that without color things can still be nice and simple just like in the olden days. We had many projects to show our ideals and it is essential in continuing in life.
DOLLAR BILL
This dollar bill project was all about allegories and symbolism. In illustrator we created images and scenes that represent the strengths and attributes of America. The most difficult part was finding images that contrasted with each other as to fit the theme, but by making our own symbols using thpen tool it was accomplished. I've learned to use the view grid and snap to grid to create patterns in a more precise way. The dollar bill project helped me refine my thinking process since we had to think about symbolism, and so it was a great learning experience.

CD COVER
The cd portfolio project is quite self-explanatory. We shifted from photoshop to illustrator making images to import into our cd template to create our own cd covers. We started off sketching out ideas then either scanning them or using them as guides to make our cover; we had a front, inside, and back cover. Most of these objects were quite easy to do such as the sketching and making stencils of images to alter them. One of the more harder things was incorporating text into our project that would show up on any computer, to do this we had to create outlines out of the texts and make sure they were done correctly. If not done so, any text in the image would not appear when opened in the main computer. I was able to overcome this by going back and selecting any text and either creating an outline for it or embedding it into the canvas. I learned to make a edged and create new brush strokes, as well as inserting a new pattern brush and using it to create an outline or border.

THE JANESSA

Greetings from Valeria, a New Technology High School (illustrator) student. The other portrait project was about creating an image of another person by applying what we know in illustrator to make it as real as we could. Learning Illustrator and photoshop is an important process that helps one be more creative and use different methods to acquire what one wants. This is also an aid for any future career in either being an artist or web designer. The most difficult part of the project was skin tone, it seems that one can never quite find the correct tone for a person, that was fixed with a bit of illustrator research. Janessa Jones is quite a difficult person to perceive in a sketch, her personality is quite outgoing but also very proper. Illustrator later on taught me to make and refine her as much as I could. This whole project was quite fun to do although it was a tad difficult to finish, with more time and effort one could make something spectacular with illustrator. What I like best about my work in the other portrait project was the detail of facial features, i was able to accomplish this using the pen and pencil tool in illustrator and then refining lines using the eraser and warp tool. Overall this project was a stepping stone into future projects and one can be greatful for having this class because it prepares you for future projects and or career movements.
Two of the most important lessons that I learned in this class was using the mesh tool to create a shadow or defined effect on a portrait, it was quite a difficult tool to learn but eventually the lessons paid off and I was able to use it somewhat properly. I also learned to freely draw as you please, make it the best possible but make it your own unique style.
